Being a mother is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling roles a woman can have, but it can also be demanding and exhausting. Moms
are the backbone of the family, and if we could be described in one word, it would be Superheroes. Mothers often find themselves sacrificing themselves in order to juggle multiple responsibilities, to include taking care of everyone else except themselves.
But for how long?
Self-care is essential for everyone, but for moms especially for many reasons. Continue reading to find out five reasons why mom's need self-care more than anyone.
To maintain your physical and mental health
Your job as a mom is demanding, both physically and emotionally. From carrying a baby, to running behind toddlers, the late nights, the doctor visit, the school drop-offs and pick-ups, life can feel like a whirlwind. All this take a toll on you, and your bodies and minds can become exhausted. Self-care activities such as exercise, getting enough sleep (whenever you can), and eating healthy can help you to maintain your energy and resilience, allowing you to handle the demands of motherhood better.
To Avoid Burnout
When you constantly give to others without taking care of yourself, you will become overwhelmed and exhausted, leading to burnout. Engaging in self-care activities can help you to recharge your batteries and regain a sense of balance and perspective, so you can continue to give to others without feeling depleted.
To Be A Better Parent
When you feel stressed, burnt out, or emotionally and physically drained, it can be challenging to be present with your children. Self-care activities such as meditation, yoga, or simply walking can help you clear your mind and be more present and responsive to your children's needs. A few minutes or hours of relaxation will lead to a more positive and enjoyable parenting experience for you and your child.
To Maintain Your Sense Of Identity And Purpose
Being a mom is a large part of who you are, but it's not the only thing that defines you. Engaging in self-care activities can help you reconnect with your interests, hobbies, and passions, giving you a sense of purpose and fulfillment outside of motherhood. Doing this, can help prevent you from feeling lost or unfulfilled in your role as a mother.
To Set A Positive Example For Children
Children learn by example, and when they see you taking care of yourself, they understand the importance of self-care and self-compassion themselves. Your children will begin developing healthy habits and attitudes toward their own well-being as they grow older.
It may sound absurd to hear that you should take care of yourself first. It goes against everything we've been advised to do as mothers. However, neglecting self-care can lead to physical and mental exhaustion, and sometimes we can lose ourselves in the process. Lack of self-love and self-care can even mitigate your ability to mother well. Happy and healthy women make for happy and healthy moms.
So go do something for yourself! You deserve it!
