For those of you who aren't big on New Year's resolutions and all those grand promises everyone makes to themselves at the beginning of a new year, but believe that we should be intentional about our personal development and growth, this post is for you.
As moms, we've had to master the art of multi-tasking. We show up constantly as the friend, lover, disciplinarian, sister, wife, boss, etc. We constantly wear many hats as we pour ourselves into our family and loved ones. The problem is that we run empty when we do nothing for ourselves, especially when we are grappling with self-doubt and low self-esteem.
Self-doubt and low self-confidence can be major barriers to achieving our goals and living a fulfilling life. In this coming year, 2023, I want you to resolve to do better FOR yourself and TO yourself. Here are some tips that have helped me manage self-doubts and build confidence in my abilities.
7 ways to manage self-doubts and build self-confidence
1. Set achievable goals
Setting unrealistic goals can lead to feelings of inadequacy and failure when you don't achieve them. On the other hand, setting and achieving small, realistic goals can help you build self-confidence and momentum. You'll feel more capable and confident about tackling bigger challenges as you accomplish each manageable goal. Start with a daily planner or just a simple To-Do list and cross out all the tasks you get done and you'll be surprised at how much you can accomplish over time.
2. Practice self-compassion.
We are often more understanding and forgiving to everyone else but ourselves. In this new year, be kinder to yourself. Don't be too hard on yourself. No one is perfect. Instead, try to talk to yourself like you would to a friend who is down. Affirmations are a huge part of my own personal practice and has a great way of changing and elevating your mindset in a very powerful way, Here's a link to some of my favorite affirmations on Youtube. Play these videos first thing in the morning for at least 21 days and watch your dreams manifest themselves in your life. Affirmation 1 Affirmation 2.
3. Learn from your mistakes.
Rather than dwelling on your mistakes and shortcomings, try to view them as opportunities for growth. After all, how do you learn if you don't make mistakes? The world is already so judgmental about people's imperfections and shortcomings, don't do that to yourself too. Reflect on what you could have done differently and how you can apply that learning to future situations.
4. Have a supportive tribe.
Surrounding yourself with supportive and positive people can help boost your self-confidence. Seek mentors, friends, and colleagues who believe in you and are willing to offer encouragement and guidance. You can also consider joining a support group or working with a therapist to help you work through self-doubt and increase your self-confidence.
5. Take care of your physical and mental health.
Taking care of your mental and physical health is an important foundation for building self-confidence. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly. It's also important to practice stress management techniques, such as mindfulness or relaxation techniques to help you stay grounded and focused.
6. Practice positive self-talk
Pay strict attention to the things you tell yourself, and try to replace negative self-talk with more positive and realistic thoughts. For example, instead of saying, "I'm not good enough," try saying, "I'm doing the best I can, and I'm learning and growing all the time."
7. Celebrate your accomplishments
Recognizing and celebrating your accomplishments is important, no matter how big or small. This can help you feel more confident and motivated to keep working towards your goals. So plan a trip or spa day as your reward for being so awesome!
Remember that building self-confidence and mitigating self-doubt is a process that takes time, patience with self and effort. Don't be discouraged if you don't see immediate results – it's the journey that matters not always the destination. Also bear in mind, that as time goes by your plans may change. Be nimble enough not to resist change and to learn when to pivot your focus. By following these few tips you can learn to manage self-doubt and build the confidence you need to become the woman you envision yourself becoming.
